just a heads up, I post A LOT of sketches and things exclusively on Tumblr now. For some reason it's more conducive for me to post sketches there, I'm not sure why, I guess I'm sort of keeping DA for my finished things.

Fair Warning: I talk about social justice issues a lot, it is not exclusively an art blog at all. People that like my art sometimes get annoyed at this. If this bothers you, don't follow. The tumblr is for ME, not for you, I'm not your art monkey and I have (surprise) feelings and opinions. You've been warned, and I get EXTREMELY pissed at this so seriously, do not give me shit about it.

So if you want to check it out, it's over here.

A lady dressed like Batgirl asked some really hard hitting questions at the convention at all the dc panels (do you know how hard it is to get into those??? HOLY CRAP, LADY!). She was met with really rude, offhanded, bullying treatment by panel members. She asked why DC had dropped from 12% female creators to 1% and was met with derision. The crowd was turned against her. I literally cried reading what was said to her. You can read about it here: dcwomenkickingass.tumblr.com/p…

You can listen to another fan, a male fan, also bringing up the subject here: robot6.comicbookresources.com/… Read more about this here: www.comicsalliance.com/2011/07…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here were the words I posted on my tumblr about this issue:
Holy shit, I am on this list!!! SO IS INTERPUNKT (Kristen Van Dam)!
Oh godddd Becky Cloonan *swoon* yessss draw everything ; ;
I think lady/queer/not-white/etc artists don't apply to mainstream comics because:
  • 1) bitch, I need to get paid by the hour, not by a month of work then wait for the check for like, 6 months
  • 2) Dude, health insurance...
  • 3) Reasonable work load
  • 4) HR department in case someone is a racist/sexist/homophobe at me
  • 5) Being able to work under another minority
I work in the Gaming Industry! The company I work at has a woman (interpunkt!) who is basically the frigging epicenter of it, she runs a team of 15(??? off hand, but around there) people, which make up more than half of the company. And because she has so much sway in the company and is a progressive woman, she was able to hire women, hire not-white people, hire queer people without a thought. I don't know how to explain this in words that are not caveman words but like, you hire one progressive person that is a minority and put them in a position of actual hiring power and things happen, things CHANGE. The company I work for provides all the things DC doesn't, I don't understand WHY the big two don't, they lose MANY talented people due to their business structure to other fields like advertising, the animation industry, the gaming industry, etc that treat them much better! A person at a fast food joint makes more money per hour than the artists that make your comics.
THAT SAID:
I WOULD WORK FOR DC.
At the drop of a fucking hat. I don't care if it would kill me, I WOULD DO IT.
"But why, vv?" I hear you ask (in my head). "Why would you do such a thing after all the crazy shit you just listed?"
BATMAN. OH MY GOD BATMAN. JUST TO BE SLIGHTLY CLOSE TO BATMAN OR GOD, CATWOMAN??? Their stories (haha, SELECT stories ; ;...) have been fundamental to my personality, my sense of justice, my ART, my WRITING, oh god. I can't even tell you how much it would just fulfill me.
But even more than that, I would LOVE to show little girls, latina people, gay people, anything people, that you can do it. SI SE PUEDE!, you know? I remember growing up and reading Wizard and I slowly realized that "....there are no lady artists..."** I remember how utterly hurt and just so fucking upset you know? Just thinking about how sad I was about it gives me goosebumps. It was such a crushing, grounding feeling. On top of that, I drew in a way that I didn't think anyone would hire me for!
Artists that inspired me, who would later also let me down in various ways that heroes always eventually let you down, were all white dudes.
But god, the women. I remember meeting Becky Cloonan for the first time and being so amazed by her artwork. It really, REALLY made me feel that sort of
I still have an early print of hers at my old house somewhere. God it was so beautiful, I remember staring at it for so long. But you know like, she still hadn't ever worked in comics** at that time** so it was still a bit of heartbreak for me. There was this lady a bit older than me and she was so talented and she still didn't work for a comic book company**. She should have been drawing Batman! All the Batman!
Ok, rambling. But yeah I would soooo work for them, either as a writer or an artist, I want to build up my resume and portfolio (MAOH, STOP) a bit more, I have to network more so that I can actually pitch to an editor (that is how you become a writer, btw, you have to get someone to introduce you and give them a pitch, pretty much, but the harder you work as an artist, you tend to get those connections naturally). I mean, I THINK I could do it right now, I MIGHT have enough resources maybe I'll try at Emerald City? I dunno, I REALLY want a really solid chance before I try to do anything! Even with solid footing, the odds are stacked against me (without even considering the minority thing). The odds won't stop me but I really want to make my effort count, if that makes sense??
BUT YEAH I WOULD WORK FOR DC SO HARD, AHHHH
**THAT I KNEW OF
Hey guys!
Doing quick quick $5 commissions. One character only, +$5 if you want another character in there. Here'some stuff from the last session to give you an idea of what you're getting. You can also click the "Done" links to see what other people got. Getting to the bottom of the queue so I thought I'd take a few more. Plus I always need money (re: hookers).
Edit: BUSTS
hey i think this one came out pretty nice.
it's a bust type thing. Personally, I think they're better because it's more about the face and face = most important to me.  if you guys that have already signed up/are signing up want yours to be a bust just tell me.
:star: You can also see me livestreaming some of the commissions in the archive here: www.livestream.com/veryverydra…
payment via paypal only. when you pay, add your da name in the subject line. I need to be able to link your dA name with your payment. You will immediately be at the bottom of the list if I cannot pair you with your payment. send payment to adriana(dot)ferguson(at)gmail(dot)com.
comment or note with a reference image of what you want (if you want something like Batman, obviously you can just say Batman, I know who that cat is). No long text descriptions, seriously. This is not "trick vv into reading your novel" time, that's not polite, dude.
:pointr: FAQ ENTRY
I was going to just post this in a journal but I figured a news thing might be a better idea.
Last night, like most nights, I couldn't get to sleep, probably because my blood is made of 90% soda. So I put on 'Shark Week 2009' on Netflix  (classy) and tried to draw a bit while I subtly terrified myself to sleep. Towards the end of the first episode, around 4:00am, I heard a very loud noise. I jumped and felt really stupid for jumping because I know that meant I was thinking "A shark is attacking me" because I was watching sharks and my instincts are not very bright.
Of course, it wasn't a shark, the sound was outside my window and sharks do not fly (yet). After my brain understood that the sharks were on TV my first thought was "my neighbor threw something out their window". You know when you hear a noise and you immediately have some thought in your head of what it was based on the sound it made? That was my first thought, even though that was highly unlikely, simply because of the type of sound it made.
So I looked out and didn't see anything at first. I live in an apartment building, just moved in, too. The building is being repainted, and when I looked out I saw couple broken branches on the tree outside my window and thought "The branch broke". It was very windy and very likely. I also thought maybe the thing the painters were using to go up and down in could have fallen over.
Eventually, I went to bed. This morning, when I went out to go to work, I saw police outside. I thought "The branch must have fallen on a parked car and someone called the cops". A man from my building, also on his way to work, was walking in front of me and had said something to the cops that I couldn't hear. And then he'd looked up at the roof of my building, which I thought was weird because the building is 18 stories or so tall and the trees are maybe 2 stories tall but I looked up too. And then he looked down and I looked down too. On the ground, under my window was a body covered in a white sheet. I knew it was a body because their feet (bare for some reason) were not covered by the sheet.
That loud sound I heard last night turned out to be one of my new neighbors committing suicide.
All day this bothered me, for the usual, obvious reasons. But I think one of the most upsetting things was that while I was sitting on my bed drawing, someone was in the same building, looking down and deciding that their life should be over. All day I've been thinking "that's so horrible that they were in a building full of people and that the felt so alone and sad and horrible".  I thought “I wish I could have known somehow and talked to them” which was impossible but there’s this weird feeling of guilt. I think that maybe the worst part to me is that this person was very, very, very sad and didn't feel like there was anyone to turn to in a building full of people, in a city full of people. But I think most people, if they see someone in this sort of trouble, try to help. I think if someone had seen him or knew that he felt badly, they would have tried to help.
I've survived many episodes of extreme depression and two or three haphazard, very stupid attempts to off myself. I get that way all the time, actually. In fact, I would classify "wanting to not exist" as my default setting, as weird as that sounds.
So, I wanted to share some stuff I try to mentally go through when I feel this way in case you or a friend you have feels like they want to die because they're extremely depressed.
Firstly,
You don't want to die. You want to be happy and alive. It just hurts a lot.
It's usually not that you want to die. Everyone pretty much wants to be happy and live. It's just that you think you're never going to be happy and everything is very, very painful so you want to not exist. You don't want to be in pain and everything feels awful so that's where the suicide idea comes into play. You just want stuff to stop sucking so hard. And it will stop sucking so hard.
It gets better.
It gets better. You will, eventually, feel better. No matter how bad it is, you will feel better. I know this is hard to consider but think about it logically. If you feel extremely, extremely horrible, the worst that you can possibly feel, then if your disposition changes, it can only get better. At the very least, you've got a 50/50 chance of feeling better. And it is worth it to feel better. Also, I know how stupid and trite "time heals all wounds" sounds and that you've heard it before. But given some time, even a few hours, you will feel better.
You are not alone.
Especially if you're reading this. You are not alone, not really. You're on a computer and on an internet site and a community where you have at least a love of art in common with the users here. Many people on this site, in your town, in your country, in the world have felt exactly like you do. You are not alone, not really. Contact someone else, be around other people, simply because it's harder to kill yourself if there's a bunch of other people around you. Have someone stay with you for the night (suicide's more common at night), you don't have to tell them why if you don't want to (but it's a good idea).
Try before you die.
Try to help yourself and try to get help. Help comes in different forms. Sometimes it means calling a hotline (1-800-273-8255). Sometimes it means doing something that you know will make you feel better. Sometimes it's meds. Sometimes it's watching a movie or eating. Whatever it is, do it. Even if you'ren ot sure if something will make you feel better, do it and see. You can die any time you choose, so you might as well try to feel better. Suicide can always be "later", but trying to feel better isn't possible after you're dead, it doesn't work the other way around.
Go to sleep.
I don't care how you do it but go to sleep. Take a nap or go to sleep for the night. There's probably some medical reason, but whatever it is, this works for me a lot. Go to sleep. Some people say "go out for a walk" or something but that's only ever freaked me out more (not saying it might not work for you, though). Go to sleep, you will feel better when you wake up. Suicidal people are usually exhausted. Go to sleep. Rested and suicidal is better than exhausted and suicidal, so you will at least feel better in THAT aspect, and feeling just a little bit better can make all the difference.
-Also-
Hotlines:
1-800-273-TALK(8255)
1-800-SUICIDE
1-800-799-4TTY (4889) (for the deaf)
more hotline stuff. crisis center locator, etc
I encourage others to post giving their own tips or checklists.
Since the beginning of this site, dA has been repeatedly criticized for its homophobic approach to art. Homosexual couples (specifically male-male representations because lesbians are hawt, guys) in particular have been repeatedly targeted by the site's admins for deletion, an occurrence so pervasive that one deviant, reapersun was able to hold an entire contest to attempt to illustrate the line of discrimination.
You might say, "the site is simply prudish!" Not true. They have an entire section labeled "fetish". Pictures of women having intercourse with tentacle monsters? De rigeur. Buick sized breasts oozing buckets of milk? Fine. But two consenting adults (especially male adults) touching? Kissing? My GOD, what filth!
The newest and most blatant example of dA's skewed treatment of gay people is a new stamp by prosaix Homophobia by prosaix
Try reporting it. You can't.
Why? Because tons of people have already tried and dA administrators have marked the case "invalid".
Their stock answer:
"Comment: Thank you for attempting to bring this deviation to the attention of the staff. Unfortunately this deviation does not meet the current definition for "Hate Art". It is important to remember that actual "Hate Art" expresses clearly racist ideals, such as the genocide or enslavement of a certain race or class of people. A work which simply expresses a dislike or negative opinion for a subject is not "Hate Art" regardless of how strong that opinion might be expressed, neither are deviations which you simply find offensive because the beliefs or opinions are the opposite of your own. Please review our FAQ entry on the subject of "Hate Art" available here help.deviantart.com/12/ so that you can be more familiar with the official definition."
Actually, no, dA. Maybe you should acquaint yourself with the year 2010 where gay people are people. Even the US government voted to expand the definition of 'hate crime" to include LGBTQ people with the Matthew Shepard Act (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_…). And even in 1990, George HW Bush signed into law the Hate Crime Statistics Act, the first to include and recognize queer people (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_Cri…). So. Even in your own definition, you include "sexual orientation".
What do you think homophobia is? "Fear of homosexuality" is what the word means in and of itself (etymologically speaking), but this word is now the equivalent of "prejudice based upon homosexual orientation". When someone commits a hate crime against a gay person it is labeled "homophobic", both legislatively and in laymen's terms. Homophobia means that you see gay people as being less, that you see them as a threat (to who knows what). Those feelings are based on stereotypes, stereotypes just as hateful and prejudiced as thinking someone black is going to harm you or that someone female is incompetent. What do you think that stamp means? It means "see gay people as less than you". When you see someone as less of a human being than you are, that creates a culture where it's just not as bad to beat, rape, murder or otherwise harm a person that's gay. This stamp is saying "I think gay people are less important than heterosexual people, who's with me?"
You don't see that as hateful?
But truly, the most appalling thing is the venue. dA is not a middle-of-nowhere town in the midwest (sorry, midwesterners, but I'm from there :/). It's an art site. This is happening on an art site. For centuries, the fine arts have been a haven for the gay and queer community, one of the few venues where we could find work and small bits of acceptance. The art community owes much of its foundation and ground-breaking achievements to gay people and gay culture (and YES, homo-eroticism), whether you're a poet (Sappho, The Iliad, ), musician (...pick one), illustrator (Leyendecker) or something almost indefinable (Warhol).
But dA, the world's largest, most famous art community is staffed by homophobic, prejudiced people and is allowing a stamp that promotes the hate of an already marginalized group of people.
:iconpowflip: is also making a powerful demonstration of the discrimination of dA's admins with this :thumb175363023: (read the comment before freaking out). This is what alerted me to the stamp in the first place, by the way.
:bulletred:Removal of PowFlip's stamp while not the other would illustrate dA's discrimination against gay people.
:bulletred:Leave them both up and dA wouldn't be following their own policy.
:bulletred:Take them both down, everybody goes home happy.
I hope dA takes the stamp down. I hope they make amends here. But given their past actions, I have very little confidence in them. This article is to let others know about the situation and what kind of organization dA really is.
Oh my God.
Ok, hi. You might have noticed that me and interpunkt are doing a comic.
What you might not know is that our comics are drawn on paper. Comic book paper.
S.T.O.P. was drawn on Canson's pre lined comic book paper (this brand, that makes me angry because it's called "fanboy" and has the worst art ever on its packaging blahblah) . For Minor Acts of Heroism, for reasons I won't go into because they're fucking boring, we switched to Strathmore (the 200 series). You're probably going "yeah, Strathmore, I've heard of them, they make good paper, and that's what Blue Line Pro is, isn't it?" Yes, exactly, person I'm pretending I'm talking to. Exactly. If there's a trusted name in paper, it's probably Strathmore.
When you get comic book boards, they're usually lined (unless you're a person that lines your own stuff). That means they're printed with guides that help you divide the paper in half and thirds, etc, shows you where the bleed area is, blahblah.
So last month I got a pack of paper from the art store and brought it home and used it blahblah and interpunkt is like "hey...this paper is super different from my pack..." and it turned out that the paper's markers were extremely way off. How off, you ask?
this much:
So I sent Strathmore an email going "dudes, your shit is all wrong" and they were like "whoa, we're sorry" and sent me a new pack.
The new pack is also wrong. Wrong in a different way than the example above. I only realized in the middle of doing a page that utilized the "third" markers very heavily.
I am not a genius of math, I'm actually a moron of math. But that's cool. It's not my job to divide measurements and use a lot of rulers (although sometimes I have to and it hurts me). But at Strathmore, it's literally someone's job to divide the paper CORRECTLY. That is someone's job. Strathmore probably had a god damn team on it. Actually, they DID have a team on it.
When I sent them an email and the sent me another pack? part of what they replied with was:
"We discovered this issue earlier this year and found that the issue went back to an early printing.  Based upon our digging into the issue of the markings we made adjustments to the layout based upon input from several comic artists."
What. WHAT. You had a BUNCH of people, including input from comic artists on this paper and it's still wrong? Strathmore, you make paper. Part of making that paper is utilizing what is called a "ruler". I assume you have AT LEAST one ruler in your possession. Perhaps you ONLY have one and someone was using that ONE Strathmore ruler to prop up an end table? I don't know!
What's MORE crazy?? BLUE LINE PRO USES STRATHMORE'S PAPER. JUST... fucking... TRACE THE BLUE LINE PRO GUIDES. YOU KNOW A COMPANY THAT DOES THIS AND HAS RULED VERSIONS OF YOUR PAPER!!! Someone YOU KNOW already did the impossible math work for you!!
I...I'm going to drink this beer now, and try to figure out how to deal with the next page, but I thought I should warn you guys. This paper is super cheap (compared to bluelinepro) so I know a lot of you might use it so I thought I'd give you a heads up.
:star:[update]:star:
So I emailed them like "the new shit you sent me is wrong." This was a long back and forth with so I'm abbreviating a lot here but with some choice quotes:
First, I was talking to someone named "ann" then I was switched to "donald". Donald thought my name was "Andria", because Donald doesn't give a shit.
"Please remember the guidelines are just that guidelines and should not come into play in the final art."
Wait. What?!! No. The whole purpose of having ruled paper is that you don't have to worry about measuring for thirds/half panels. so already, i know I'm in trouble, this guy doesn't think where the third markers are is an important thing.
"It is impossible to tell the exact dimensions from your scan."
What!!!
"May I ask, do you resize your artwork for scanning and printing?  We consulted with Marvel and DC artists along with the Center for Cartoon Studies when we laid the sheets out. Most of them do not use blue lined sheets except in commercial work.  They resize their personal work so they prefer to use unlined sheets and will resize at their computer."
What. I don't even...what...
Marvel and DC artists use ruled paper. They...yes they do, what the fuck are you talking about. in fact, DC and Marvel MAKE THEIR OWN RULED PAPER WITH THEIR LOGO ON IT.
secret files: Krypto pencils by manapul Legion Issue 1 p.21 by Cinar Marvel Adv: Avengers 35 page 2 by CaseyJonesDA
WHAT. It's a scan so yes, it's SHRUNKEN DOWN but I don't like... randomly transform half the page so that it's all fucked up. Furthermore, I'm just scanning it to SHOW HIM what I am seeing when I take a ruler to the page! I'm not just looking at a scan on a computer screen! He also sent me .pdf showing what their layout is for the page, and is all "well the layout is correct and the scan you sent matched the layout" (what he means by 'match' is that the logo is at the top, they had an older run of paper that had the logo at the bottom and was wrong). WHAT. I don't give a shit if your layout ON THE COMPUTER is correct, I want the physical paper to be correct!! THE PAPER, BITCH!
Ok, so at this point I realized I was speaking to someone that really doesn't know what they're talking about and can't even form words enough to talk to me about this sensibly. And he's like "we'll send you some unlined paper so you can rule it however you want" like, fuck you buddy! I bought this so I wouldn't have to figure out where the half and thirds marks are! YOU MADE THE PRODUCT! Don't tell me that a product YOU MADE has no real point, are you insane?! So then I sent him a giant email going "I do not want anymore paper from you, DO NOT send me any more paper" and links to REAL comic pages with the logos at the top, etc. Hopefully he doesn't even reply back to me because I'm blown away at how fucking stupid this is.
Moral of the story: do not buy Strathmore ruled pages. Ever. They are too lazy to USE A RULER and physically check the paper coming out of their printers.
**note that while I'm full of rage and cursing in this post, my replies to this idiot were nothing but patient and nice, I even had kristen run it through her unbitchifying filter before I sent my responses! only my last email going "WHAT" was just angry and not rude.
[update]da, you never cease to anger me
  • Listening to: my blood pressure rising
So! I put in the order for the prints the Deluxe S.T.O.P. ordering people get, and accidentally put in "9" instead of "10" (we'd gotten a last second order that day and so the number I'd had in my head was still "9" instead of "10"). Stupid mistake, I know. I realized it immediately, just as I'd clicked the final button paying for the order.
So I immediately contacted the "Help Desk". I said the following:
"Hello, I have mistakenly ordered 9 prints when I wished to order 10. Is there anyway to either cancel this order or add another print to the order? I would be happy to pay the difference, of course! Thank you."
Simple, right? And if the answer was 'no, we can do nothing, sorry', that would have been fine too, I would have just reordered them again. I'm kind of on a deadline here so I want to just get the order out, even if it means paying for shipping twice, it'd suck but I need to know if I have to do that or not in a timely manner, right?
So I wait. And wait. And about 24 hours goes by and there's a link in the original  "verifying that you sent a ticket" email that says "check the status of your ticket" so I can at least see if anyone's read it because if they haven't, I can just give up and order the extra print, right?
Wrong! I was greeted with this
"Solved", fourteenthstar? What solving did you do here? You just marked it solved and did nothing? How is that solving? Do you get paid for that? Wow, I didn't know work could be accomplished by simply saying you did it. I did not get any note or email or notice or ANYTHING telling me that fourteenthstar had even "solved" my complaint. Nothing. Not even a "sorry, can't do a thing". That's all I wanted! A "the princess is in another castle" would have also sufficed, fourteenthstar, it would have taken only a few typed words from your hands to tell me what the situation was so that I could shell out money to pay your salary. I ask for such small things, fourteenthstar.
I have replied with this: "Oh hey thanks for doing nothing and not even replying. I wouldn't even know that you'd deemed this "solved" if I hadn't checked the status of this to see if anyone had even read it. I wouldn't mind if you'd been able to do nothing, but at least inform me instead of passive aggressively deeming it "solved" by the nothing that you did. It's astounding that you get paid for this. Don't worry, I'll let everyone know that you don't care."
what fucking galls me??! is that i still have to buy that print! i'm still going to because i need that print!! AHHH @_@
[UPDATE]
I got this in an emailed notification of my updated ticket status ( SO IT TURNS OUT YOU'RE FULLY CAPABLE OF COMMUNICATING THROUGH THE HELPDESK, EH?)
chix0r, Mar 24 06:19 am (PDT):
Hi,
I apologise for any confusion. The member of staff who normally deals with prints queries has recently left the company.
As your order has moved into processing, there's no way that we can amend it. You will have to go ahead and place an additional order if you require another print.
Kind regards,
Fiona
As much as I'm a fan of someone being calm when faced with rage, none of that makes any sense.
Why? Why are we just allowed to ignore problems and say some words at people that don't match reality and I'm supposed to just shut up and be quiet?!! WHY? *hyperventilate*
1) when I sent that ticket, it HADN'T moved into processing
2) someone else leaving doesn't explain why you didn't respond.
3) nnhh WHAT?! what confusion! I'm not confused! You marked this as "solved" and didn't say anything even though you are fully capable of replying because you just did!
nnnhh ahhh!! @__@!! i ordered the extra print last night so there's nothing they can do to alleviate my suffering, but at least go "SORRY I DIDN'T RESPOND TO YOU WITH WORDS LIKE A HUMAN BEING UNTIL NOW, TO SAY SOMETHING THAT MAKES NO SENSE".
